ImageChart.com

A little less chart jargon.

Plain-language definitions for the measures, formats, and chart-reading terms used across ImageChart.com.

Use these definitions as a reading companion, not as a substitute for a data provider’s exact methodology. The source notes explain how the site’s examples are calculated. Terms such as RSI and MACD are educational references and are not claims of live platform functionality.

Adjusted price

A historical price transformed according to a provider’s corporate-action methodology. Check which adjustments were applied before comparing sources.

Annotation

A label attached to a specific observation or interval. It should clarify visible evidence rather than invent an unsupported cause.

Axis

A labeled reference that connects plotted position with values or categories. Units and scale choices are part of the chart’s meaning.

Baseline

A reference position used for comparison. A zero baseline matters when full bar length represents magnitude.

Candlestick

An interval summary with a body spanning open and close and wicks reaching high and low. The chart should document its color and fill convention.

Close

The selected closing value for an interval under the source’s definition. An incomplete current interval may not yet have a final close.

CSV

Comma-separated values: a plain-text data format. The examples include a provenance comment, headers, and values with documented units.

Drawdown

Here, percentage distance below the running maximum of a positive closing-value series: (current / running maximum − 1) × 100.

High and low

The maximum and minimum reported values within a selected interval. They do not reveal the order in which those values occurred.

Image chart

A chart published as a portable image such as PNG or SVG. A useful export keeps its title, measure, period, and data-status note.

Index rebasing

A transformation that divides values by a starting value and multiplies by a reference such as 100. It changes the display baseline, not the definition of the source measure.

Infographic chart

A quantitative display arranged with a focused headline, annotations, and context to explain a particular comparison.

Linear scale

A scale where equal distances correspond to equal absolute differences in the displayed measure.

Logarithmic scale

A transformation where equal distances correspond to equal proportional changes for positive values. It requires a clearly labeled definition.

MACD

Moving average convergence/divergence: a momentum measure based on the difference between selected exponential averages, often displayed with a signal line. It is terminology here, not a calculated studio feature.

Moving average

A rolling summary of selected observations. The method, window, interval, and input field should be documented.

OHLC

Open, high, low, and close. Four values summarize an interval without preserving every intermediate observation.

Percentage point

The arithmetic difference between percentage values. A share increasing from 20% to 25% rises by five percentage points.

PNG

A raster image format with fixed pixel dimensions. Studio PNGs render at 1600 × 960; template PNGs are 1800 × 1080.

Price change

A change calculated from prices alone under the stated definition. It does not automatically include distributions, cash flows, fees, or taxes.

RSI

Relative Strength Index: a momentum indicator summarizing recent gains and losses under a selected formula. Familiar thresholds are not guarantees of reversals. It is not calculated by this studio.

SMA

Simple moving average: an arithmetic mean over a stated observation window. The sample overlay uses five synthetic session closes.

SVG

Scalable Vector Graphics: XML-based vector artwork. The downloads contain self-contained shapes, text, a title, and an explanatory description.

Synthetic data

Invented values created for demonstration, not measured observations. All chart datasets supplied by this site are synthetic.

Time window

The span of history visible in a chart. It is distinct from the interval represented by each observation.

Total return

A return measure that includes specified distributions under its methodology. Verify definitions before comparing it with a price-only series.

Volume

A source-defined measure of trading activity over an interval, such as shares or contracts. It uses a different unit from price.

Warm-up period

Initial observations without enough history for a complete indicator window. The five-session SMA has four initial unavailable values.
