Data, formulas, and the fine print.
Know what the charts calculate, where the sample values come from, and what the examples do not claim.
A transparent sample-data policy
All charts in the studio and template gallery use synthetic values generated for education. No market-data API, quote feed, company reporting service, or user account is connected. “Market index” is a descriptive label for an invented sequence, not the name of a real index. Each export keeps the illustrative-data note inside its artwork.
Market OHLC and the five-session average
The forty-session sequence is generated deterministically from a rising baseline with periodic variations. Open values are based on the preceding synthetic close plus an offset. Highs and lows are constructed to contain both open and close. Volume is a positive synthetic share count. The exact sequence is available in the sample JSON file and the template CSV.
The simple moving average is the arithmetic mean of the current closing value and the preceding four closes. The first four positions have no complete average. A ten- or twenty-session view filters the already-calculated full sequence; it does not reset the calculation’s input history. Display labels are rounded, and the stored close values have two decimal places.
Revenue and allocation
The eight fictional quarterly revenue values are 42, 48, 45, 57, 62, 59, 73, and 81 in USD thousands. The labels use example years Y1 and Y2, not actual reporting dates. The allocation values are arbitrary weights: equities 45%, bonds 30%, cash 15%, other 10%. They sum to 100% and are not a recommended portfolio.
Drawdown and volume
Drawdown at each observation is (synthetic close / running maximum close − 1) × 100. The running peak includes the current observation and all earlier sample observations. Display cropping does not reset it. Volume uses the generated daily share counts and a separate unit; it does not identify buyers, sellers, or motives.
Exports and data tables
The studio SVG is self-contained vector artwork with an explicit title and description. The browser rasterizes that selected SVG to a 1600 × 960 PNG. Template PNGs are 1800 × 1080. CSV files contain a provenance comment followed by headers and values; remove the initial comment when importing into software that does not support it. A table on the page offers another route to the selected values.
Editorial sources and scope
Chart Notes combines original explanations, invented numerical examples, and selected primary references. Each article links once to a relevant external editorial source. Mathematical examples are written to be reproducible, and descriptions of technical indicators are kept distinct from claims about predictive performance. Publication labels are archive dates; substantive article revisions in this edition are dated September 25, 2026.
Reference material includes Fidelity’s technical indicator guide, the W3C guidance on complex images, the ONS data visualization service manual, and the SEC investor bulletin on performance claims. These references do not imply sponsorship or endorsement.

A clear chart can still be based on unsuitable data or an incomplete methodology, so readers should verify measurements before using an adapted layout to make a factual claim.
